Amazons The Amazons were a group of warrior women who fought many of the great Greek heroes. They consistently went against what was considered the normal female role and led lives like their male counterparts. Unlike some myths in Greek mythology, the myths that involve the Amazons are spread out over time and often have multiple variations of one myth. Myths involving the Amazons even sometimes have versions of the same myth with different Amazon warriors, making it difficult to understand what Amazon women is associated with the certain myth. Throughout Greek mythology, the Amazons were portrayed as fierce warriors and this carries over into today’s society. The Amazons were daughters of Ares, the God of war, and the nymph Harmonia. They were fierce, warrior women who lived separately from men (Powell). They trained the way that male warriors did, even though they were female. They refused to follow the ways of the Greek society and were often portrayed as barbarians for i t (Powell). The name Amazon actually means single breast, which is where the idea that the Amazons cut off their right breast came from (Greeka). The Amazons were not part of the Greek way of life and where always living at the outer edge of the Greeks world. In Greek mythology, it is not very clear on where the Amazons actually resided.
